In 1949 the German philosopher Karl Theodor Jaspers coined the phrase “Achsenzeit” (“Axial Age” or “Axis age” in English) to describe a time between approximately 900–200 BCE when “The spiritual foundations of humanity were laid simultaneously and independently and these are the foundations upon which humanity still subsists today.” We start with an ancient model, the axial model, which was developed somewhere between 800-200 B.C.E., in roughly this 600 year period. In the axial model, a sharp distinction was made between this world and somekind of a beyond, and the idea arose that although we are in this world, we are not altogether of this world. Axial Age is a term coined by German philosopher Karl Jaspers in the sense of a "pivotal age", characterizing the period of ancient history from about the 8th to the 3rd century BCE. During this period, according to Jaspers' concept, new ways of thinking appeared in Persia, India, China and the Greco-Roman world in religion and philosophy, in a striking parallel development, without any obvious direct cultural contact between all of the participating Eurasian cultures. Jaspers Socrates and Plato were the only axial philosophers who took sexual desire (eros) seriously, as did Greek culture generally.
